A fun twist on traditional french toast made with challah bread for the holidays. 

French toast brings back memories of eating breakfast with my family as a child. It’s a comfort food that touches every generation and pleases every palate.

My version of French toast below is made with challah bread, apples, bananas, a hint of maple syrup and a medley of ingredients that you will want to wake up early in the morning for to secure your seat at the table!

French Toast Challah-day Bread

Ingredients:

1 challah (whole wheat preferred) – broken into small pieces

1/4 cup melted butter (1/2 stick) or ¼ cup light olive oil 

1/3 cup brown sugar 

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup

3 eggs 

1/3 cup egg whites

1 cup milk or almond milk

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup chopped, peeled apple

1 thinly sliced banana

½ cup chopped nuts

sliced almond and chopped pecans for sprinkling on top

Turbinado sugar for sprinkling on top

Cooking spray

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Spray a 9 X 9 inch baking dish with cooking spray.

3. Break challah into small prices and set aside. 

4. Combine melted butter (or oil), sugar, syrup, eggs, egg whites, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. 

5. Add challah to wet ingredients, combine well.

6. Mix in nuts, chopped apple and banana. 

7. Pour evenly into baking dish.

8. Sprinkle sliced almonds and pecans and a light sprinkle of Turbinado sugar on top

9. Cover with foil wrap and chill overnight in refrigerator.

10. Bake for around 30 minutes covered.

11. Remove cover and bake until top is golden brown. 

12. Serve warm.
